Top 6 Tips to Prevent Diaper Rash in Babies
1. Change diapers frequently. Newborns require more changing as their skin is thinner and more sensitive. A general rule of thumb is every 3 hours and immediate changing for soiled diapers to prevent diaper rash. Don’t tape diapers on too tightly as it can prevent airflow and trap moisture within, creating an ideal environment for bacteria to multiply and irritate skin further.
2. Clean, clean, clean. Don’t use fancy wipes and harsh detergents on baby’s bottom. Those may contain alcohol, propylene glycol, fragrances or preservatives, known to sting and irritate baby’s bottom! When changing baby, clean up by using plain warm water with cotton balls or a soft washcloth, then gently pat dry. Don’t rub! You can break baby’s skin by rubbing and allow bacteria to enter! If baby makes an extra messy poopie, use a gentle and mild, fragrance-free soap like our Baby Castile Wash that dispenses thick and creamy foam so you get just enough cleaning power where you need it!

3. Give baby bottom a gentle bath soak. Instead of soaking baby in a harsh detergent-based bubble bath that can further irritate a diaper rash, try colloidal oatmeal instead. It is clinically proven to reduce itch and inflammation, while gently moisturizing baby skin. Most importantly, you don’t have to worry if baby eats some of it as our Baby Colloidal Oatmeal Baths are 100% food-grade! Remember to air dry baby’s bottom before re-diapering!

4. Go commando. If baby has diaper rash, the most important thing is to keep baby’s bottom dry. With diapers on, the constant peeing and pooping only creates the perfect home for bacteria to spread further. If possible, wait about 45 minutes after baby’s feeding and allow baby some airtime. You can go commando with your baby too and enjoy some skin-to-skin time! Although talcum powder has been used by the older generation to keep bottoms dry, don’t use them. If baby inhales the powder, it could irritate her lungs! Yikes!
5. Use a protective barrier balm. A barrier balm or ointment creates a layer on top of skin so that bacteria and other nasties cannot get through to skin. Select a gentle, safe and organic balm that contains as few ingredients as possible, is anti-bacteria with antioxidants, and does not contain irritating and harmful additives like preservatives, alcohol, glycols, PEGS, fragrances, just like our Baby Miracle Balm! It not only helps prevent diaper rash, it can heal diaper rashes too. And it is cloth-diaper safe, unlike those that contain zinc oxide!

6. Try different diapers. Perhaps the one baby has on is not absorbent enough, allowing moisture to stick around, or it’s too tight and the constant rubbing against baby skin leads to rashes. It could even be because baby started solids or is having diarrhea! Switch around and you may find one that helps baby prevent diaper rash. Or just use cloth diapers because that guarantees frequent changes and hopefully the rash goes away!
